Transforming Women from the Outside In
In this issue:
Tweens - 7 to 12
Girls this age usually start developing an interest in
clothing, fashion, and how they look. They also
experience growth spurts and sometimes weight gain,
which can make it difficult to find clothing that fits
both their body and their age. During this time they will
transition from children's departments to teen stores
like American Eagle, Hollister and Aeropostale. Moms need to
encourage their daughters' interest in clothing and
allow them to express their style and follow
trends in age-appropriate ways. It's OK to make
them wait for certain styles, and start pointing out
that certain styles might not look the best on them.
They are watching you, so set a good example. To
ease mother/daughter conflicts, I can shop with one or
both of you. This top
and leggings set from Macy's is cute, trendy
and perfect for young girls.
Teens - 13 to 19
Teen girls are heavily targeted by the fashion and retail industries, and they start looking like young women, which gives them many options, some of which could be inappropriate. This is the time to experiment with trends, be bold with fashion, and find your personal style. Learn which colors look best on you, learn your body type and how to dress to flatter it. Like the tween years, teen years are a transition time between girl and woman, and from teen stores to women's departments and stores. Nordstrom's BP Junior Department is a great place to explore, find your style, and start the transition from girls clothing. I can give a one-hour consultation that includes an assessment of your coloring, style and body type, along with a tour of some clothing departments and stores that will work best for you.
Twenties
These
are the years that most fashion
is aimed at, so it should be the
easiest time of life to dress
and look your best. It can
also be a busy time with
college, new
careers, young babies and
children, and not enough time or
money to spend on yourself. Do take
advantage of trends, but take it
up a notch by shopping in better
departments and stores,
transitioning out of juniors
departments, especially for
career and interview clothing. Don't be afraid to spend
more on a few quality clothing
pieces.
Here is a chic casual look for a 20-something. Mixing this
Fossil print cardigan
and graphic t-shirt
are perfectly age-appropriate
and fashionable.
I would like to thank the ladies of Aldersgate United Methodist Church for allowing me to present some wardrobe tips at their Deborah Circle meeting in June. They were all so welcoming and friendly.
Don't forget the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, July 16-August 1, featuring new fall fashions marked down before the season.

My book, 100 Six-Word Lessons to Look Your Best from Head to Toe has more tips on keeping up with trends, dressing right for your own body type and more. Only 9.95.
