Transforming Women from the Outside In

In this issue:  Vacation Dressing  ~  Leggings at Any Age  ~  Maxi Dresses

Vacation Dressing

Many people are planning their summer vacations and thinking about what to take along.  Of course it depends on where you are going and what your activities will be, but here are a few things to consider.  Most importantly, take comfortable shoes, especially if you'll be doing a lot of walking, hiking and sight-seeing.  There are many comfortable brands that are fairly attractive, such as Merrell, Born and Puma.  Look at inexpensive stores such as Old Navy for t-shirts and hot-weather items that you might not use as much at home.  Consider incorporating two summer trends, leggings and maxi dresses,  into your vacation wardrobe.

Leggings at Any Age

I get a lot of questions about whether it's ok to wear leggings at certain ages, and how to do it.  When I saw Clinton Kelly last month at Macy's, he said that women can and should absolutely participate in trends at ANY age.  Leggings are one of those trends that can be worn by any age (or size), but need to be worn with some guidelines.  Here is a perfect example of how to wear leggings, with a cute tunic top from Macy's and flat sandals.

  • Wear leggings with a top or dress that hits anywhere from mid-thigh, or fingertip length, to the top of the knee.  Below the knee is ok, but will not look as trendy, especially for spring and summer.  Women under about 30 can wear shorter tops, but not if they're working in a professional environment and have to bend over a lot.

  • For spring and summer, try lighter colored and shorter leggings in gray, white or bright colors, that coordinate with the top or dress.

  • The top should have either an empire waist or natural waist, or you should wear a belt.  The baggy tunic look is more of a nineties look, and is not as flattering, especially on short women.

  • Leggings are slimming because they fit close to the body.  If you want to look taller, match the leggings to the top to elongate the body.

  • Wear leggings with high heeled sandals, flat sandals or ballet flats for a modern, spring look.

  • Buy leggings in either the apparel departments or hosiery departments.  Hue and DKNY are popular brands in hosiery departments.

Maxi Dresses

If you have heard my presentations, you know that I am not a fan of long skirts and dresses, because of the way they can drag a woman's body down, hide her shape, and make her look larger, older and outdated.  However, there is an exception to every rule, especially in fashion.  Maxi dresses, a repeat of a style from the seventies, are back, and available in a variety of beautiful shapes and prints.  They are perfect for vacation, resort, beach and summer occasions.  Always wear them with flat sandals.  This maxi dress from Macy's has a retro print and a flattering shape.

I would like to thank those who attended the Sammamish Chamber's Women in Business conference and hope you enjoyed your day.  Thanks also to Redmond Presbyterian Church for welcoming me to their ladies tea and allowing me to help with their fashion show, along with Shalimar from The Closet Consignment Shop, who provided the beautiful clothing.  I always enjoy meeting and sharing with new women.
